Following Mikhail Iampolski, intertextuality is a rich framework for studying the processes by which allusions to other films or texts are used in cinematic figuration, as well as for exploring the intricacies of the chains of associations that come to produce the energy and force of individual films. In an age of increasing multimedia scholarship, how better to explore filmic allusionism than to experiment with working through it to materialize new acts of poeisis, audiovisual works of comparative screen studies? In her lecture, “The Poiesis of Cinematic Allusionism,” Catherine Grant (Birkbeck, University of London) will discuss some of her videographic studies, focusing particularly on her 2019 work “The Haunting of The Headless Woman.”
