We would like to highlight two publications in our Cinepoetics - English edition book series that were recently published as paperback.

Now available as paperback is Hauke Lehmann’s study Affect Poetics of the New Hollywood, translated into English by John Lattimer. The book aims at rethinking our conception of this critical period in US film history by focusing on the interplay of three modes of affective address of viewers – suspense, paranoia, and melancholy. On this basis, Affect Poetics of the New Hollywood lays the groundwork for a re-evaluation of film history as a history of affect.

The second publication, Michael Wedel’s Pictorial Affects, Senses of Rupture, was published as paperback in September 2021. It is an extensive study of the poetics and culture in popular German cinema 1910-1930. In his book, Wedel takes an alternative approach to the history of German cinema from this period by focusing on the poetics of popular genres such as the disaster film, melodrama, the musical, and the war film, exploring their cultural reverberations and modes of audience address. The book argues for the prominent role popular German cinema’s forms of discursivity have played within the historical formation of modernity.

Cinepoetics - English edition comprises nine publications until now, available digitally and as hardcover. A tenth volume will be added in the fall.
