mediaesthetics #5: "Material & Method: The Video Essay" out now
News from Jul 10, 2024
The fifth edition of our open access journal mediaesthetics – Journal of Poetics of Audiovisual Images is now available online.
In tune with the interdisciplinary orientation of the journal, Dorothea Horst and Thomas J.J. Scherer lay out their in-depth analyses of political campaign ads for the European Election 2024. Also using film analytical groundwork in a different audiovisual field, the Cinepoetics working group "Games" present their work in Remarks on Video Game Analysis.
This issue’s thematic focus begins with a comprehensive overview on theory, poetics and practices of the video essay by Volker Pantenburg. His article, Videographic Film Studies, not only gives an historical analysis of the field but turns to the potentials and limitations of such an expansion of the film analytical toolkit.
In addition, Evelyn Kreutzer as well as Elisabeth Moor and Benjamin Deboosere contribute video essays with accompanying scholarly statements: "From the 'material' of the ambiguities of bodily gestures and movements (Mohr/Deboosere) and of sonic conventions (Kreutzer) to the investigation of the 'methods' of estrangement that blur the boundary between image/sound and screen/speaker (Kreutzer), these videos express a cinematic thinking about film with film and from within film," as this issue’s editors Matthias Grotkopp and Christina Schmitt conclude.
