For our fifth Cinepoetics Lecture, film scholar and senior fellow at Cinepoetics Jennifer M. Barker (Georgia State University) engages with modes of cinematic synesthesia. Her talk "Color Outside the Lines: Animating a Model of Cinematic Synesthesia" revolves around the phenomenology of childhood and responds to research in the field of neonatal synesthesia.

Synesthesia is an inherently time-based problem when thought of as transgression of sensuous and cognitive boundaries. This temporality of the synesthetic quality of both moving images and memory, though, has rarely been an object of scholarly discussion in film and media studies. Barker creates space for this discussion by providing context and phenomenological expertise that colloquial descriptions of synesthesia in the Arts continue to lack.
