Catherine Grant is one of the most distinguished video essayists and theorists in Videographic Film and Moving Image Studies. Her more than 200 audiovisual works have been published in various online magazines, shown at festivals, and exhibited in film museums. Her video essays as well as her theoretical reflection on this form focus on questions of film spectatorship, psychoanalysis, and materialistic thinking. Before joining Cinepoetics as a fellow, she was Professor of Digital Media and Screen Studies in Film, Media and Cultural Studies at Birkbeck, University of London until August 2020. Prior to that she researched and taught at the School of Media, Film & Music at Sussex, the University of Kent and the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. In 2008, Catherine Grant created the online archive Film Studies For Free, which makes the research perspectives of Film and Moving Image Studies available to a broad public free of charge. 

Catherine Grant is the author of The Videographic Essay: Practice and Pedagogy (with Christian Keathley and Jason Mittell, 2019), editor and co-founder of the open access platform REFRAME and the online magazine [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film & Moving Image Studies, as well as the book Screening World Cinema: A Screen Reader (with Annette Kuhn, 2006) and her numerous articles were published in various magazines.
